Indigenous Intellectual Property

Indigenous Intellectual Property belongs collectively to the people (L'nu'k/Ani Yunwiya/Onkwehon:we) who originated the writing, graphic, design, tale, or story.

From the United Nations Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous People (13 September 2008):

Article 11[20]

"Indigenous peoples have the right to practise and revitalize their cultural traditions and customs. This includes the right to maintain, protect and develop the past, present and future manifestations of their cultures, such as archaeological and historical sites, artefacts, designs, ceremonies, technologies and visual and performing arts and literature."

Article 31[21]

"Indigenous peoples have the right to maintain, control, protect and develop their cultural heritage, traditional knowledge and traditional cultural expressions, as well as the manifestations of their sciences, technologies and cultures, including human and genetic resources, seeds, medicines, knowledge of the properties of fauna and flora, oral traditions, literatures, designs, sports and traditional games and visual and performing arts. They also have the right to maintain, control, protect and develop their intellectual property over such cultural heritage, traditional knowledge, and traditional cultural expressions."

Copyright Information Page

Please read this before copying anything!

We make no claim to copyright of text in the public domain! In Canada, works enter the public domain at the author's death plus 50 years. If you are in a country (e.g. the USA) where original works can be "owned" for a much longer period of time, and object to copyright law of the country where this site is hosted, please don't bother complaining which will probably only result in your access to this site being restricted; we advise you just act responsibly and go elsewhere to read.

Also the pages hosted at this site are non-commercial, and nothing appears here that is not in the public interest and/or for research purposes. Inclusion of the writings of others constitutes fair use as far as we can see; if your writings are included here and you disagree, please email us outlining your objections.

A note about copying anything from this website: all the pages in this archive are works in progress, which means explanatory notes may be added and unclear parts of the text may be clarified. Therefore we would like to ask that you not just copy/paste as there may be some integral things that subsequently change! Please just post a link to a page if you must, let us know you've done so and/or join one of our mailing lists, and check back periodically to see if there is new material.

Better yet, join one of our mailing lists or forums to be kept informed of any changes!

Almost all of the material is original and for the most part the authors and artists are participating in creating and maintaining this website. If you see something elsewhere on the web without copyright or author information and a link back to us, chances are it was stolen from this website! Please let us know about it!!
